Great News!!!

Yesterday, I learned that the second painting had sold at Taos Art Museum’s Russian Night in Taos. I’m so glad for that.

This morning, the roll continues as I learned that my painting, Hilltop Road, will be included in the Kansas Park Trust exhibit, Visions of the Flint Hills. I’ll send out an email newsletter with more details.

But wait! There’s more! I also found out that Davis Gallery, in Sheridan, Wyoming, wants to hang my work. Once again, I’ll include details in the newsletter.

: Lookout Mountain from 7th and Nile

One thing that visiting with Mara Schasteen did was to give me a guilt trip about making time to paint. Seriously, if she can make time with four kids, then I can make time. Since today was a short day, I went to lunch with fellow artist, Ruby Neal. After a great time of conversation and food, I went out looking for a place to paint. I’ve been jonesin’ to paint Lookout Mountain and I could see it from where we were. A little driving around took me to a place about a block south of State Highway 40 (locally known as Colfax). The view was awesome and so was the light.

What you other artist will undoubtedly point out is how I kind of phoned it in toward the bottom and lower right.First, I was out of time. Second, a large cloud moved in and parked, blocking all my light. Both my panel and the mountain were now wholly in shadow, so I was making up colors and features. Finally just decided to hang it up. I threw in some trees at the bottom and packed up my gear.

For those unfamiliar with this scene, there are actually several towers (of the erector set variety) atop these hills. They were also left out due to time constraints. The building in the fore is the Jefferson County Courthouse (locally known as The Taj Mahal).

This one will not be on the sale block, but it will stay in my private collection (closet in the studio) for later reference. As regards the photo, the greens a not so intense in the actual painting. Not sure what happened there. It’s 12.16 on a Fredrix canvas sheet that comes in a pad of 20 or something. Probably not archival and definitely not what I want to put out there for sale.

: North Cemetery Draw

This past Friday, I drove up to Sheridan, Wyoming to visit my friend and fellow artist, Mara Schasteen. She’s a wonderful painter and a great friend. Had a grand time visiting with her and the family.

This little 12×16 piece was done just a few steps from her back door. The photo was done on site while the piece was still on the easel. Sheridan is such a beautiful place. I’ve told her to let me know when the trees begin to turn and I’ll come up right away.

Western Light and Russian Night in Taos

That’s right, buckaroos (which I believe is derived from the Spanish vaqueros ), this is titled Western Light. We were returning from dinner at one of our favorite Mexican places and the light slanted across this broad field, just touching the tops of the trees.

It’s 12×16, oil on masonite- $575

Much as I like this one, it is not one of the pieces that was chosen to hang in the Taos Art Museum. Yes, that’s what I said. Two of my paintings have been selected for Russian Night in Taos - an auction to benefit the Taos Art Museum. Even better is that it’s held at the former home of Nicolai Fechin. Well, all the prep is done and I have about a dozen 12×16 panels to work with. I’m really very excited to get going. I’ll probably post a few, then send out an email to the whole list.

As I’ve already said, the plan is to paint three paintings per week and post the good ones here.

Final Plans and Preparations

A little while ago, I decided to do three or four small paintings every week. Apart from this being an exercize in discipline, the goal is to produce several saleable pieces each month and present them on this site at very affordable prices.

This weekend I’ll be sanding and priming new panels (!!!) to get things going. Maybe I’ll post photos as I go along. Nunca sabes. You never know.

After the panels are done, and while gesso is drying, I have to sort through photos and pick out some subjects to work on in the evenings. Should be fun. Here’s one of my favorites.
